Venizelos Graves

Our journey will start at Venizelos Graves. A site where you can enjoy a panoramic view of the rich green plain of Chania, the imposing White Mountains, the Cretan Sea, the town of Chania. This is, also, the final resting place of the ethnarch Eleftherios Venizelos (1864-1936) and his son Sofoklis Venizelos. Just a few meters away of the Venizelos graves is the historic chapel of Prophet Elias, which dates back to the 16th century, featuring the Venetian architecture style. -Estimated visit time on site: 20min.

Holy Trinity Monastery

Afterwards you will have a chance to visit the Patriarchal and Crusading Monastery Agia Triada of Jagarolon. The Holy Trinity (Agia Triada) Monastery, as it is also called, is probably the most impressive monastic complex of the final period of Venetian rule on Crete, due to both its scale and architectural form. The large exhibition of woodcarvings and icons in the monastery Museum is impressive and makes you wonder about the number and value of the much older relics which were destroyed by the Turks during the 1821 Revolution. – Estimated visit time on site: 40min.

Gouverneto Monastery

Last but not least, we will visit Gouverneto Monastery. Dated to 1537, the monastery is a Venetian style fortress with towers at each end with some Baroque influences added later, being one of the oldest monasteries in Crete. A cave called Arkouditissa or Arkoudia, is also located in the vicinity where the goddess Artemis was once worshiped. – Estimated visit on site: 40min.

Rethymno- Arkadi- Eleutherna

Starting from €230

Rethymno

Rethymno is a city of approximately 40,000 people, the capital of Rethymno regional unit on the island of Crete. It was originally built during the Minoan civilization, but was never a competitive Minoan centre. It was, however, strong enough to mint its own coins and maintain urban growth. One of these coins is today depicted as the crest of the town: two dolphins in a circle. Today’s old town is almost entirely built by the Republic of Venice. It is one of the best-preserved old towns in Crete.
The town still maintains its old aristocratic appearance, with its buildings dating from the 16th century, arched doorways, stone staircases, Byzantine and Hellenic-Roman remains, the small Venetian harbour and narrow streets. The city’s Venetian-era citadel, the Fortezza of Rethymno, is one of the best-preserved castles in Crete.

Arkadi Monastery

The Arkadi Monastery is an Eastern Orthodox monastery. The current catholicon (church) dates back to the 16th century and is marked by the influence of the Renaissance. This influence is visible in the architecture, which mixes both Roman and baroque elements. As early as the 16th century, the monastery was a place for science and art and had a school and a rich library.
The monastery played an active role in the Cretan resistance of Ottoman rule during the Cretan revolt of 1866. 943 Greeks, mostly women and children, sought refuge in the monastery. After three days of battle and under orders from the hegumen (abbot) of the monastery, the Cretans blew up barrels of gunpowder, choosing to sacrifice themselves rather than surrender. The explosion did not end the Cretan insurrection, but it attracted the attention of the rest of the world.

Eleutherna

Eleutherna, also called Apollonia, was an ancient city-state in Crete, Greece. The city’s location made it a natural crossroad, as it lay between Cydonia on the northwest coast and Knossos.
In the Museum of Ancient Eleutherna the exhibits span a period of three and a half millennia (3000 BC to 1300 AD) and include objects of art and everyday life from Prehistoric, Geometric, Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine years.
The Eleutherna Bridge is an ancient Greek corbel arch bridge near the Cretan town of Eleutherna.
The bridge which is still in use was first described by the Englishman T.A.B. Spratt in his Travels and Researches in Crete, after he had paid a visit to the site in 1853. While there is general agreement that the bridge of Eleutherna date to the pre-Roman period, a more precise dating is hampered by the lack of proper finds. According to Nakassis, the extant bridge was built sometime during the Hellenistic period, while the Italian scholar Galliazzo dates the construction more precisely to the end of the 4th or beginning of the 3rd century BC.

Lake Kournas is relatively small, with a maximum length of 1,087 m and a maximum breadth of 880 m. Kournas Lake is the ideal place for an afternoon walk or a daytrip nearby. Many people like to have an afternoon picnic there. The landscape is lovely and relaxing, whether you want to go for a walk in the countryside, swim or ride a pedalo on the lake. There are two springs on the southeast bank, one of which, the Mati or Amati (“eye”) as the locals call it, is visible in late summer.

Maleme Cemetery- Ally Cemetery- German tunnels Platanias

Starting from €120

Maleme Cemetery

Our journey will start from Maleme. Maleme is best known as a landing site for German paratroopers invading Crete in 1941, at the start of the Battle of Crete (Operation Mercury) during World War II. The paratroopers captured the airstrip, which was located just outside the town. Once captured, this airstrip allowed the Germans to airlift in the reinforcements. Many of the paratroopers lost their lives in the attack and are buried in the German war cemetery located on a hill above Maleme.

Ally Cemetery

In the area of “Vlites”, west from the gulf of Souda, lie the graves of the ally soldiers who fell in battle during WW2. The cemetery was constructed after the war to contain the remains of all the Common State soldiers that fell in the Cretan battlefields and to express the gratitude of the Greek people. It contains the remains of: 862 persons from the United Kingdom, 5 persons from Canada, 197 persons from Australia, 446 persons from New Zealand, 9 persons from South Africa, 1 person from India, 7 persons from other ethnicities; a total of 1527 persons.

German Tunnels

Our last stop would be the German Tunnels in Platanias. Locals say that when the Germans occupied the island, due to the strategic position of Platanias village, they settled infantry and artillery and for storing ammunition and other supplies they built underground tunnels in various positions. The most important of these tunnels is the one below the church of Agios Dimitrios.
During the Battle of Crete, a wounded German pilot was carried in Platanias, but succumbed to his severe injuries. In fear of harsh reprisals by the Germans, he was buried in a rough grave next to the church. Unfortunately this point was later chosen by the German officer for starting the construction of the shelter. The Church Commissioner at that time Michael Stamatakis invoked the sanctity of an olive tree located at the entrance of the tunnels to persuade the Germans to move the starting point 3 meters away, in order not to reveal the secret.

Gonia Monastery

Gonia Monastery, Monastery of Our Lady of Gonia or Monastery of Panagia Hodegetria is an Orthodox monastery overlooking the Gulf of Chania. The monastery was founded in the 9th century and was originally dedicated to St. George. It was rebuilt between 1618 and 1634 in its present location, with Venetian influences in its architectural design. The distinctive fountain in front of the monastery’s entrance was built in 1708 and the belfry in 1849. According to monks the present location at Kolymvari was considered safe from an attack. Despite this, the monastery was heavily damaged by Ottoman bombardment on many occasions throughout its history evidence of which can be seen today by the remaining cannonball lodged in the monastery wall. During World War II the monastery was partly destroyed by German bombing. Today, the monastery contains numerous Byzantine artifacts from the 15th and 17th century. It also has numerous relics and other rare religious treasures from the Byzantine period and ancient inscriptions on the walls.

Saint John the Hermit Cave, Marathokefala

At the area Marathokefala at Spilia lays the famous historical cave of St. John the Hermit. Inside the cave there is temple of the 15th century and the foundations of old cells that date back in the 17th-18th century. On the left of the cave lies the crypt where Saint John the Hermit hided by the frequent visits of the shepherds and farmers. Attached to this, there is a small room that was used as a Secret School during the Turkish Era. Next to the temple, a crack on the rock drips water throughout the year, “the holy water of the Saint” as told.

Rotonda Church, Episkopi

The church of Archangel Michael is one of the finest Byzantine monuments located at village Episkopi where it operated as a diocese (episkopi) during the second Byzantine Period. The church is best known as Rotonda as it has circular mastoid dome, like the temple of the Rotunda in Thessaloniki. There is still only a third temple of that type in the Balkans. The Rotunda of Kissamos dates back from the 6th century and its floor is decorated with mosaics with various plant, animal and geometric representations.

Afterwards we will visit one of the oldest monasteries in Chania, Couverneto Monastery situated on a rocky site at an altitude of 260m and built as a fortress with 4 towers. It is believed that the monastery was founded by hermits and monks near the entrance of the gorge Avlaki so as to protect themselves from pirate raids. St. John the Hermit lived in a cave in the gorge Avlaki, adjacent to the monastery, and is considered as the founder of it. You can walk in Avlaki gorge by following the stone paved trail that descends to the sea.

On the land belonging to one of the older monastic dependencies of the Monastery of Chrysopigi (a monument of the 17th century), in the years 1993-1996, the old glebe of Agia Kyriaki was restored. It is located near the village of Varipetro, Nea Kydonia, 12 km from Chania. The new monastic centre is being created in a valley overlooked on either side by caves (some of which are chapels).

In the area of Agia Kyriaki, on a rocky hill under the ruins of the Byzantine castle “Kastellos”, the new monastic buildings of Chrysopigi were erected. The aim is to create a setting where the structured and the unstructured space are in balance, so as to highlight the natural environment and harmonize relationships with the buildings.

An escape for a few hours that will give you the opportunity to visit Aptera Archeological site which is one of the most important ancient city-states of Crete. Our next stop will be Ally Cemetery, a well-preserved place in a peaceful and relaxing location. Our last stop will be at Agia Triada Tsagkarolon Monastery which is one of the most important monasteries of the end of the Venetian Empire in Crete.

Aptera Archeological site

One of the most important ancient city-states of Crete, Aptera, constitutes a unique area of history, civilization and scientific interest. The “little Pompeii of Crete”, as it has been called, because of its monuments preserved so high, Aptera is a unique place that has an unprecedented effect on the visitor, who, rambling in the archaeological site, travels back in time, exploring, discovering and feeling that he walks among the highly skilled Apteraian archers and warriors. Dominating Souda bay, ancient Aptera constitutes the best to date organised archaeological site of Chania. It is located close enough to the city in a unique landscape with an impeccable view. It is not by chance that it has been chosen as the right place to celebrate the August full-moon.

Agia Triada Tsagkarolon Monastery

The Monastery of Agia Triada (Holy Trinity), or Tzagarolon Monaste

ry as it is also known, is one of the most impressive monasteries you will see in Crete. The Monastery of Agia Triada is located on the Akrotiri Peninsula, in the north of Chania Prefecture. It was built in 1634, on the site of a small church dedicated to the Holy Apostoles. Tzagarolon Monastery is a square building complex with the monastery church standing in the centre of the verdant courtyard. Inside the complex there was an olive press and a cellar for the wine produced by the monastery, while on the south side is the monastery library, formerly the Abbot’s Room. Even if you are not into religious tourism, the Monastery of Agia Triada Tzagarolon is well worth a visit. It is a lovely, peaceful and impressive place, something different for visitors who want to see the historical monuments of the island. In recent years the Monastery of Agia Triada Tzagarolon has developed the systematic cultivation of organic vines and olives. It has won international prizes and is mainly sold abroad. Naturally all the products of Agia Triada are available for sale from the monastery shop.
